What I know for sure is that we are created to be creators. It came naturally to me as a kid. Having dug a pond in my childhood backyard (without permission), I would spend hours with my pencil and notepad writing what I called, "Pond Watch". I recorded the activity of the goldfish, tadpoles, water bugs and more. I was the 1980's backyard version of Thoreau. I needed to create. I filled notebooks with poems and short stories. I dreamed and imagined that our 1/2 acre lot was a nature center that students would come to visit. The same 1/2 acre also hosted my imaginary soccer career. As an adult I have loved being a student. It's an excuse to learn and create. I think that was my motivating factor in pursuing a doctorate in my late 40's. You see, I spent the first 15 years of my pastoral career writing and preaching a sermon each Sunday. For a pastor in mid-sized churches, this rhythm was both thrilling and daunting--Sunday was always coming! Now I have the luxury to create on my own terms, and so I want to write here. It's for me, I guess. But I hope it's for you too.
